Mary Poppins The Musical - Background : Mary Poppins is a Broadway musical based on the Disney film adaptation of the stories by P.L. Travers. Mary Poppins brings to Broadway the story of a magical nanny who transforms the lives of a British family with her unusual gifts. An exceptional production that represents some of the finest stage effects on Broadway today, Mary Poppins is one of the most popular family shows on Broadway. With dancing statues, flying nannies, upside down chimney sweeps, and more surprises, the Broadway musical of Mary Poppins is as enchanting as the nanny herself. Though slightly long, there is no doubt that Mary Poppins is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Disney recommends this show for audiences 6 and up.
Broadway’s Mary Poppins is full of spectacle, color and magic. Representing the best of what Disney can do on Broadway, this show will please most audiences. It is a beautifully designed production. At its heart, Mary Poppins is an old-fashioned tale told in an old-fashioned way with an incredible use of modern technology. With flying scenery, magic trap doors, and dancers soaring in the air, this show is full of fun. Mary Poppins appeals to our nostalgia for old fashioned tales , childhood fantasies, and dreams—didactic in its message and conventional in style, it somehow escapes clichés and provides a thrilling and sentimental entertainment for families.
The only minor shortcoming of this Broadway show is that it is a little long, and some of the children in the audience seem to become restless. Disney has a talent for creating theatre that always tends to be longer than it needs to be. The result is a Broadway show that is not always suited to the stamina of a first-time young theatergoer, though there is plenty of entertainment on-stage to interest and entertain. Specifically, the choreography is inventive and the dancing superb. The child actors are particularly impressive as they learn the value of patience, kindness and respect. But, it is the adults who learn the most from the magic of Mary Poppins, as the story raises questions about how one balances the challenges of work and parenting. This Broadway show offers joy, surprises, magic and music that continue to delight whether you are hearing it for the first or the fiftieth time. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! The sight of a dancer literally dancing on the ceiling or Mary flying across the audience will take your breath away. There is a message in the magic, and that is sweet too. On the whole, Mary Poppins is a Broadway show you will not soon forget.
